Ideas & Tips
Egg-citing Family Fun
Make this spring and Easter your best yet! Find out how to prepare your eggs for coloring and different ways to decorate and color them. Dipped, swirled, dyed, or sculpted-no matter the technique, these coloring ideas for decorating Easter eggs will achieve eggs-traordinary results!

Egg Coloring—Know the Basics

There are dozens of creative egg decorating techniques to try, but first, here are a few basic tips: 1
  • Keep eggs refrigerated until it's time to cook them. To make perfect boiled eggs, cover eggs with water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Turn off heat, cover the pot, and let sit for 30 minutes. Then put boiled eggs into cold water to cool them down.

To blow an egg, first shake the egg to break the yolk. Then use a small nail to make a hole in the top and bottom of the egg. Blow gently until the egg is empty.

For extra-rich dye colors, use food coloring paste (available at craft and cake decorating stores). Dissolve a dab of paste in a cup of hot water mixed with 1/4 cup cider vinegar.

Use pasta tongs for dipping eggs.

    Wear rubber gloves.

  • For a quick egg-drying stand, use a paper towel tube cut into sections.
Fun Decorating Ideas

Try one of these ideas and get on with the fun part—decorating!
  • Easy Design Trick. Try wrapping eggs in rubber bands before dying them for fun and original patterns.

  • Swirled Egg Designs. Let kids make a mess with these swirled Easter egg designs. Applying and mixing the paint is the part that young crafters love best. Click here to learn how.

  • Add the Personal Touch. Create family memories and traditions. Try Art Tissue-Paper Collage Eggs or personalize your eggs by adding family and pet photos. Click here to learn how.

  • Go Natural. Color the natural way—use natural ingredients in your own kitchen to create natural dyes. From raspberries to red apple peels, get the vibrant colors!

Fun Activities for the Whole Family
Gather the family for these holiday fun activities!
  • Play an egg-on-a-spoon relay race.

  • Hide plastic or real decorated eggs around and outside the house for an Easter Egg Hunt the kids will love. Whoever finds the most eggs wins a prize!

  • Have a “guess how many jelly beans in the jar” contest.

  • Make a tasty Easter basket with your favorite cupcakes or cookies. Make green “grass” by coloring shredded coconut and with green food coloring, and use to decorate your basket and desserts. Finally, top your treats with a few jelly beans or chocolate candies as your “eggs.”

  • Make a “pin-the-tail-on-the-bunny” game (use cotton balls for the tails, of course).

Celebrate the Meaning of the Holiday

Whether it's Easter or Passover-whatever you celebrate-take some time to explain the history and significance of the holiday and its traditions to your kids. Ask them what the holiday means to them. They can even put on a small play to show you what it means to them and showcase their talents to the family!
