Ideas & Tips
Summer Fun—Splurge-Free!
Everyone needs a summer vacation. But with today’s high prices for gas and food, you probably think a summer getaway won’t fit in your budget. Think again! Follow these secrets to enjoying a summer trip without breaking the bank.

A nearby adventure can be just as fun as going somewhere far—and it’s less stressful! Think of all the traffic you’ll miss if you find a neighboring city or town to visit. Explore your options—from amusement parks to petting zoos, you have plenty of choices that won’t eat away at your gas money.

Take public transportation, like the bus or subway, if you can. If only two or three of you are going on your trip, try to carpool with another small group that’s headed to the same place.

If you’re the driver, plan out your trip ahead of time to avoid getting lost and wasting fuel. Keep a map with directions in the car—and, if you have a navigation system in your vehicle, take advantage of it!

If you’re planning a trip further away, be on the lookout for coupons and packages that can save you money. Many vacation spots have great all-inclusive packages that include free airfare, meals, or drinks.

Instead of paying for fancy restaurant meals while you’re on vacation, head to the local supermarket when you get there. If your accommodations have a kitchen, cook your family’s meals there. Buy quick and easy snacks, like fruit, nuts, dry cereal, and sandwiches to prevent hunger-induced, last-minute stops for pricey food.
